This is an age of digital connectivity. No doubt about that. Where before technological devices worked in isolation, they now deliver an enhanced performance by linking to each other over a unified network. Take a look at the internet, for instance. In the past, dial-up connections could either power the internet or the phone, but not both at the same time. So, people had to compromise on their needs, and wait to make their calls or send their emails. Whereas, in today’s world, you see hybrid fiber-cable services offering ‘always-on’ internet, TV, and phone capabilities through a small cluster of interconnected devices, spelling convenience for everyone.

How to Connect Your Home Phone to a WIFI Router

Do you also want to get a taste of such high-performing connectivity? Then, let this post show you exactly how you can link your home phone with wireless internet. Read on and follow the instructions to start picking up your calls on the web.

A Step-By-Step Phone & Router Pairing Guide

Just like the internet, telephones have come a long way too. In case you’ve subscribed to digital phone service, such as Spectrum voice, which provides all the standard features of a traditional landline and transmits your calls over a private network (also called Voice over Internet Protocol), or have an analog landline at home, you can use the following methods to link your phone to the internet.

Method 1: Using a VoIP Compatible Router

Turn Off Your Router & Modem – First, unplug your router and modem from the power outlets, disconnecting any synced devices in the process, and place the phone set near them.

Examine the Modem-to-Router Line – Check the Ethernet-based connection between your router and modem. If the cord is loose, tighten it to ensure consistent wireless coverage.

Get Hold of a Phone Cord – Find the RJ11 cable for the phone and bring it to your installation station. If you’ve subscribed to the telephony service from the same provider who gave you the router, the chances are that such a cable will be a part of your equipment kit.

Run the Cable from the Phone to the Router – Connect one end of the RJ11 cable to the back of your phone set and plug the other end in the ‘PHONE 1’ port at the back of your VoIP compatible router. It usually looks like a telephone jack.

Power On the Devices – Turn on the modem, router, and the phone set. The lights on the router should stay stable for both the internet and phone connectivity.

Give a Test Run – While opening a website on your laptop browser over the Wi-Fi, place a call to a friend from your newly connected phone, and see if both services work well simultaneously. Ideally, they should. But, if they’re not, call your phone and internet operator for technical assistance.

Method 2: Using a DECT Router

Check Device Capabilities – Before starting, read the user manual accompanying the devices carefully. Check if your router is DECT capable and whether your home phone supports such a type of router. Once everything is clear, then proceed to the setup.

Power on the Phone – Your router may already be dispensing wireless broadband speeds throughout the home. So, plug in the AC adapter of your phone set to the power outlet, or put in a fresh set of AAA batteries if it’s cordless, or recharge it over a base station if you have one.

Hold Down the Router’s DECT Button – Find the DECT button on your router’s panel and press it down for a few seconds until the lights flash. As a result, the home screen will start showing on the phone’s display. This means that the pairing is complete.

Give a Test Run – Call someone from your phone while browsing the web to evaluate the performance.

Method 3: Using a Standalone VoIP Adapter

Power OFF the Equipment – Start by turning off the modem, router, telephone, and other corresponding devices that will be a part of this operation. Clear your table of clutter and set the hardware in the right order, i.e., modem, router, adapter, and phone, with instant access to power outlets.

Connect the VoIP Adapter with the Router – Fix one end of an RJ45 Ethernet cable at the back of your VoIP Adapter and the other end to the designated slot in your router.

Link the VoIP Adapter to the Phone – Run an RJ11 cable between the VoIP adapter and the phone set, making sure to connect both ends in the correct sockets.

Turn ON the Equipment – Plug the modem, router, VoIP adapter, and phone set in the power outlet(s) and see the lights turn on for both internet and phone connectivity.

Give a Test Run – Make a call or check a voice feature from the phone while browsing the web over the router’s Wi-Fi speeds from your laptop. Here the VoIP adapter acts as a bridge between the analog landline and the digital router.

Wrapping Up:

Though you may not be able to connect a typical router with an average home phone, still this post shows you some of the best tried-and-tested methods by which you can bypass this limitation and enjoy calling across the internet stream.
